High Quality NGSS Design

Hot NGSS Design Badge Awarded: Aug 1, 2023 Awarded To: Twig Science: Volcano Hunters Verify

Just Announced!

The Twig Science Middle School module Volcano Hunters, one module of 28 from the program, has been awarded the NGSS Design Badge by NextGenScience at WestEd.

Read WestEd’s report that includes the EQuIP Rubric for Science.

In Volcano Hunters, students take on the role of volcanologists to make sense of the following Anchor Phenomenon:

In Kathmandu, Bougainville Island, Auckland, and Yogyakarta, people live in the shadow of hills and mountains. Three of these four locations are near the ocean, and three are in similarly rocky areas. Some of the places have experienced devastating volcanic eruptions in the past, while others have managed to find ways to protect themselves.

During the Volcano Hunters module, students use visual media, datasets, maps, and hands-on exploration to figure out why some mountainous areas have volcanoes and others do not. They apply the three dimensions of the NGSS as they analyze real-life data from active volcanoes, assess threat levels, and devise a plan to protect people from the dangers of eruptions.

Volcano Hunters is one module of 28 making up Twig Science Middle School, a phenomena-based program designed for the NGSS in which students investigate, make sense of, and explain phenomena using a blend of hands-on, digital/print, and video resources. Twig Science was designed and developed for the NGSS. Program developers collaborated with both Imperial College London and Stanford University’s Center for Assessment, Learning, and Equity (SCALE) experts for scientific accuracy and assessment.
