Why Simcenter Testlab RT?

In today’s fast-paced marketplace, businesses face significant challenges such as rapidly evolving customer demands, increasing product complexity and rising development costs. Traditional physical prototyping is no longer sufficient to keep up, especially as the number of product variants grows, making physical testing impractical or impossible. To address these challenges, many businesses are adopting innovative solutions that combine physical and virtual (physical-virtual) systems to test and validate designs in real-time, ensuring seamless interaction between the two domains.

Simcenter Testlab RT helps you test and experience physical-virtual systems in real-time in the lab or in the office with powerful real-time hardware and software platforms.

System-in-the-loop testing – a revolution for vehicle integration

Learn how system-in-the-loop testing de-risks subsystem integration and connects the product development stages by fusing the worlds of simulation and testing.

Integrate the virtual and real systems

Use the X-in-the-loop (XiL) approach to integrate virtual components with physical components for comprehensive system testing.

A holistic approach for testing complex systems

Connect physical test specimens to a virtual system that simulate in real-time to replicate real-world scenarios and minimize integration risks. Quickly adapt to various system configurations and complexities.

Accelerated development

Shift the focus of performance testing from the full physical system to a physical-virtual systems. XiL enables earlier performance evaluation and provides realistic testing in a controlled environment.

Applications for Simcenter Testlab RT

Mechatronic systems Simulators Qualification tests Virtual sensors Autonomous systems
Early testing of mechatronic systems using physical-virtual integration Experiencing and tuning system performance on simulators Designing and de-risking qualification tests Enhance system control and measurements using real-time virtual sensors Autonomous and intelligent physical systems testing using real-time 3D world simulation

Test in real-time

Real-time means that all computations executed by Simcenter Testlab RT are done based on reliable time periods and with microsecond precision. This enables you to accurately combine real-time simulation and real-world physics for systems testing allowing you to virtualize operational environments of the physical system under test (SUT).

Connect the real world to the virtual world

Seamlessly interface physical systems and their virtual systems by leveraging analog and digital communication real-time interfaces. You can interface virtual systems to simulators, test bench environments and embedded control units. In addition, gain invaluable insights into system behavior by monitoring, acquiring and analyzing the physical and virtual sensors of the system-under-test in real-time.

Scalable computational performance

Simcenter Testlab RT delivers scalable computational performance, tailored to accommodate the complexity of real-time simulation and control. The real-time environment runs on industrial personal computers (IPCs) via theSiemens SIMATIC® suite, which provide scalable capabilities in terms of central processing unit (CPU) type, memory and disk size and more to best fulfill each application’s needs.

Plug-and-play execution of digital twins

Simplify the process of setting up executable digital twins with an intuitive interface for a plug-and-play experience. With one click, you can upload simulation models, control algorithms, terrains, roads, prerecorded data and more to create a parametrized and real-time executable digital twin. Ensure long-term compatibility with many digital twin formats, such as the Functional Mockup Interface (FMI).

Achieve faster testing turnaround

Gain remarkable efficiency and flexibility through the ability to swiftly configure and automate tests via an intuitive web interface and by accessing and operating the system remotely from any device. By eliminating complex programming, you can also simplify XiL applications. This helps you minimize downtime, maximize productivity and empowers you to streamline the testing workflow.

Explore Simcenter Testlab RT capabilities

Real-time co-simulation Scalable computational performance Interface to the real world Test parametrization Automation API Clock synchronization Open and integrated
Simcenter Testlab RT orchestrates the co-simulation of physical and virtual subsystems in real-time. This is provided in a zero-programming environment. The simulation models that are part of the co-simulation can originate from Siemens solutions (Simcenter Amesim, Simcenter Smart Virtual Sensing) and other vendors. These models must be compatible with real-time and be exported for Simcenter Testlab RT as real-time target. The co-simulation performance is optimized to cover from the simplest use-cases, involving one digital twin and its communication to the real world, to the most advanced use-cases involving multiple digital twins interacting with each other and with multiple physical systems. Simcenter Testlab RT runs on Siemens SIMATIC industrial PCs, which are suitable for many applications and environments (office, test benches, work floor…). The supported Industrial PCs offer optimal characteristics such as CPU type and performance, memory size, hardware board extensions and fan-less operation to best fulfill the application needs. Simcenter Testlab RT offers two options to interface to the real world that can be used simultaneously. First, the real-time hardware platform can be integrated as a hardware device, via fieldbuses and digital buses, into the control & automation systems of test benches and simulators. Second, I/O hardware devices can be connected to Simcenter Testlab RT including haptic systems such as steering wheels, pedals and joysticks, CAN hardware devices for ECU communication or data acquisition I/Os such as in the Simcenter SCADAS Mobile/Lab data acquisition system. Tests can be fully configured and parametrized on Simcenter Testlab RT using its versatile web user interface. This includes changing and tuning the parameters of FMUs (simulation models using the Functional Mockup Interface standard) or changing the co-simulation settings. Simcenter Testlab RT comes with an Automation API that can be used to easily control and automate the use of the real-time hardware platform from any external system. It allows for example changing test parameters, selecting the active test, arming, starting and stopping it. The Simcenter Testlab RT hardware platform can be accurately clock synchronized to external hardware systems using the IEEE1588 Precision Time Protocol. For that, the platform is connected via an Ethernet cable to other PTP devices over a LAN network. Simcenter Testlab RT is integrated into the Simcenter ecosystem, next to being an open solution. The ecosystem brings a large number of off-the-shelf functionalities and long-term stability while the openness enables custom integrations. The Simcenter ecosystem includes Simcenter SCADAS data acquisition hardware and Simcenter software for engineering data processing, system simulation, reduced order modelling, finite element modelling, virtual sensing, multibody dynamics and many more.
