GeoCities - The Internet is Here!

Article: GeoCities

GeoCities was a free web hosting service founded by David Bohnett and John Rezner in 1994 as «Beverly Hills» (BHI) Internet.
In its original design, users selected a "neighborhood" in which to host their web page. These were named as cities or regions according to their content — for example, sites related to computers were located in «SiliconValley» and everything related to entertainment was assigned to «Hollywood» — then the name of the site or a neighborhood/street and a house number. Subsequently that scheme was abandoned in favor of another with the name of the user as a subdomain, although until before its closure, several pages continued to use the original system.
In April 2009 it was announced that GeoCities would disappear forever, so they stopped accepting new registrations, and finally on October 26, 2009, they formatted all their servers, so it was no longer possible to recover anything that had been hosted on said servers. After 10 years, the Japanese version of GeoCities, which was still active, closed on March 31, 2019; to forever extinguish said brand.

History

The company «Beverly Hills» (BHI) web hosting and web development began with a web directory of its own, which was thematically organized into six "neighborhoods". These were named as cities or regions according to their content — for example, sites related to computers were located in "SiliconValley" and everything related to entertainment was assigned to "Hollywood".

Webcams that broadcast live were located in several real places to emphasize the geographical concept. In mid-1995, the company decided to offer users of its website, known as "Homesteaders", the possibility of developing their own web pages in the company's neighborhoods, assigning a street and a house number. Currently, that scheme has been abandoned in favor of a scheme with the user's name as a subdomain. So then, chats, newsletters and other elements of virtual community are quickly added, helping the rapid growth of the website. In December of the same year, Geocities already has fourteen neighborhoods, adds dozens of new Homesteaders a day and manages to serve six million pages a month. Given the success achieved, the company decides to focus on increasing the number of users and expanding the virtual community. On the 15th of the same month it becomes known as GeoCities.
