The Web is Our Oyster!
Now featuring the hottest sites on the internet!
Netscape Communications Corporation (originally Mosaic Communications Corporation) was an American independent computer services company that totally rocked the early internet! Founded by the legendary Marc Andreessen and Jim Clark, Netscape was all about making the World Wide Web accessible and, like, totally awesome for everyone. Our groundbreaking Netscape Navigator browser was once the undisputed king of the web, and while the competition is fierce, we're still pushing the boundaries of what's possible online!
We invented the JavaScript programming language, which makes all those cool animations and interactive things happen on websites. And let's not forget about SSL for secure online communications! We're all about innovation, baby!
It all started with the visionaries Marc Andreessen and Jim Clark. They saw the future and it was the World Wide Web!
Marc Andreessen and Jim Clark are total legends!
Yeah, things got a little crazy with Internet Explorer, but that's what happens when you're the coolest kid on the block! We were the pioneers, and even though market share shifted, our impact on the web is undeniable!

Netscape was the first to truly capitalize on the emerging World Wide Web! We were founded as Mosaic Communications Corporation back on April 4, 1994. Our first product? The awesome Mosaic Netscape 0.9 browser, released on October 13, 1994. It went nuclear in the market in no time!
We even changed our name to Netscape Communications Corporation to avoid trademark drama. And guess what? Our internal code name for the browser was "Mozilla" – because we were gonna be the "Mosaic killer"! Radical!
On August 9, 1995, Netscape had an IPO that was totally outta this world! The stock doubled, then doubled again! It was so huge, it basically kicked off the whole dot-com bubble! Marc Andreessen even graced the cover of TIME Magazine!
We were doing so well, Microsoft even tried to cut a deal with us. But nope! We said no and they released Internet Explorer. That's when the legendary really kicked off!
In a move that shocked everyone, in February 1998, we open-sourced our browser code and created the Mozilla Organization. This was all about community and making the web even better!
Besides our killer browser, we had a whole suite of amazing products:
Product | What it Does | ![]() |
---|---|---|
Netscape Navigator | The best web browser EVER! (Okay, maybe it's evolved a bit...) | Defunct (But its spirit lives on!) |
SuiteSpot | Award-winning server software for your enterprise web and intranet needs. | Defunct |
Netcenter | Our consumer web portal. Your gateway to the net! | Defunct |
JavaScript | The language that powers the dynamic web! | Still Kicking! |
SSL | Securing your online communications. | Still Kicking (as TLS)! |
Netscape browser development continued until December 2007. AOL announced it would stop supporting it by early 2008. It's been a wild ride!
Remember when we open-sourced our browser code? That led to the creation of the Mozilla Organization, which later became the Mozilla Foundation.
And guess what powers Firefox? The awesome Gecko rendering engine, which totally started with Netscape! Pretty sweet, huh?
We're proud to have paved the way for so much innovation on the web!
While our main operations have ceased, you can still find us on the web!
