Creating a Lasting Legacy

In 1898, Warren A. Bechtel left Peabody, Kansas in search of construction work and opportunity out West. It was the first chapter in a history that would go on to span 126 years, 160 countries, and 25,000 projects. What began as a small construction outfit evolved alongside the needs of a growing nation and a rapidly changing world.

While much has changed at Bechtel, the desire to explore new frontiers has remained a driving force. Our history is a history of being first to market, providing proof of concept, and going where no one has.

We built the first nuclear power plant to produce electricity. We constructed the first pipeline under the Arctic. We were one of the first American construction companies to establish a presence in Saudi Arabia. We built the facilities that produced the first U.S. LNG exports in more than 40 years.

We’re one of the only companies in the world to lay railroad track and fiber optic cable; to build shipyards and semiconductor factories; to support NASA’s moonshot in the early 1960s and now, its latest mission to send humans to Mars. And we’re just getting started. Our history is best understood by the incredible projects that have shaped it. Take a journey through our most iconic work by visiting WaaTeeKaa, our company’s virtual museum experience.

Project Description
Arizona & Nevada, U.S.
The Hoover Dam
New Deal projects lifted America out of the Great Depression. The Hoover Dam, Bechtel’s first megaproject and the world’s tallest dam, still generates power for 1.3 million people today.
Idaho, U.S.
Experimental Breeder Reactor I
The birth of nuclear power ushers in a new era in energy. Bechtel created the reactor, the world’s first to generate usable electricity. Today, the site is a National Historic Landmark. Bechtel would go on to work on more than 80% of nuclear plants in the U.S. and 150 worldwide.
California, U.S.
Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART)
Post-war growth in the Bay Area made transit an ongoing problem. The solution: an innovative rail network that would cross fault lines and dive beneath San Francisco Bay, among other feats. When BART opened in 1972, it spurred a renaissance in modern rail transit, both nationally and internationally.
United States
NASA’s Moonshot
America won the Space Race with the help of Bechtel engineers, who supported the Gemini and Apollo programs. Today, we’re helping to build the mobile launch infrastructure at Kennedy Space Center for a return to the moon — and someday, the first mission to Mars.
Saudi Arabia
Jubail Industrial City
From megaprojects to the first “giga-project,” Bechtel transformed a sleepy fishing village in Saudi Arabia into the world’s largest industrial city. Requiring resources and logistics on an unprecedented scale, it’s the biggest civil engineering project in modern times, and it continues to grow.
United Kingdom
The Channel Tunnel
The first dreams of linking Britain and France can be traced back to Napoleon’s time. It took two centuries, but Bechtel played a crucial role in making this engineering feat a reality. Today, around 350 trains per day traverse the 50 kilometer-long tunnel, which is located 50 meters beneath the English Channel.
Ukraine
Chernobyl New Safe Confinement
The aftermath of history’s worst nuclear accident is now sheltered under the world’s largest land-based moving structure — a dome bigger than Wembley Stadium and taller than the Statue of Liberty. Bechtel led the team responsible for the dome, which was designed to prevent radiation releases for the next 100 years.
Washington, U.S.
Tacoma Narrows Bridge
One of a new generation of suspension bridges, the Tacoma Narrows Bridge is the fifth longest suspension bridge in the U.S. and the longest built in the United States since the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge in 1964.
Australia
Curtis Island LNG
Bechtel has built 30% of the global LNG capacity, promoting the transition from fossil fuels, cutting carbon emissions, and improving energy accessibility in developing areas. Bechtel simultaneously built three LNG production facilities at Curtis Island that together account for 8% of global LNG.
Kentucky, U.S.
Blue Grass Chemical Agent-Destruction Pilot Plant
Bechtel led the safe destruction of 523 tons of chemical weapons at Blue Grass Depot, fulfilling U.S. treaty obligations and protecting community health.
